Dr Nik Hirani
Researcher, Clinician, Centre Leadership Team
Nik is a consultant respiratory physician leading the interstitial lung disease (ILD) service in Edinburgh and is a Reader/PI in the Institute for Regeneration and Repair at the University of Edinburgh. He has a long-established interest in early phase lung fibrosis clinical trials, exploratory biomarkers and macrophage biology in lung inflammation and repair. Nik has led multiple experimental medicine trials, has chaired impactful clinical international guideline committees and generated the ELFMEN study, one of the largest longitudinal cohorts of ILD globally. He co-leads the RRD biobank and registry, focusing on rare cystic and interstitial lung diseases in children and adults. Nik grew up in Leicester and as a life-long supporter of Leicester City football club is well rehearsed in difficult long-term projects that are interspersed with sporadic miraculous successes.
