Hilmi holds an MSci (Hons) in Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine from the University of Nottingham and an MSc in Cancer, Stem Cell, and Developmental Biology from Utrecht University. During the MSc programme, he received research training in multidrug resistance mechanisms and targeted therapies for refractory cancers by using 2D and 3D cell models at the Princess Máxima Center for Pediatric Oncology and the Karolinska Institute. In October 2025, he returned to the University of Nottingham to begin his PhD in Professor Simon Johnson’s group. His doctoral research focuses on elucidating the mechanisms involved in the defective AT2–AT1 cell transition in lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) and on developing human cell models to test drug interventions that restore proper alveolar repair.
