Dr Stefan Unger
Researcher & Clinician
Dr Stefan Unger BSc (Hons) MBChB DTM&H PhD MRCPCH, is a Paediatric Respiratory Consultant at Edinburgh’s Royal Hospital for Children and Young People and an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Edinburgh. His research focuses on chronic respiratory diseases in children across diverse economic settings, particularly chronic cough and suppurative lung disease, including bronchiectasis and PCD but also Interstitial Lung Diseases in Paediatrics. Dr Unger has been leading a Scottish Government-funded Modernising Patient Pathway Project to enhance diagnostics and treatment for paediatric chronic respiratory diseases. He has a PhD in epidemiology through the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and completed an Medical Research Council (MRC) UK Career Development Fellowship.
Dr Unger is experienced in academic and industry-led studies, including large-scale randomised controlled trials. Currently an NHS Research Scotland (NRS) Research Clinician, Dr Unger co-leads the Paediatric Bronchiectasis Network UK (PBNetUK) and chairs the European Respiratory Society’s Paediatric Respiratory Infection and Immunology Group 7.04. He represents Scotland in the International Children’s Bronchiectasis Education Advocacy and Research Network (Child-BEAR-net) and serves on the British Paediatric Respiratory Society’s executive committee.
