Dr Karen Mackenzie
Researcher and Clinician
Dr Karen Mackenzie is a Clinician Scientist and Honorary Consultant in Clinical Genetics based at the Institute of Regeneration and Repair at The University of Edinburgh. She completed an MBChB (Hons) and an intercalated BSc in Immunology, followed by a PhD in allergic lung disease at The University of Edinburgh. Her post-doctoral research led to a long-standing interest in understanding how rare genetic alterations can cause inflammatory disease. In 2022, Dr Mackenzie was awarded an MRC Clinician Scientist Fellowship enabling her to start her own research group studying rare genetic lung diseases. Dr Mackenzie’s work within the Rare Respiratory Disease Centre is focused on using cell-based and lung organoid models to explore potential therapeutic targets for a rare genetic interstitial lung disease called COPA syndrome. Outside of work she enjoys travelling and camping.
